ELECTRONIC MEDIA SPECIFICATIONS

1. MI uses QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand. If your ad is not created using one of these programs, we will be forced to charge you additional production/pre-press charges (see bottom of page). WE DO NOT USE INDESIGN AND CAN NOT ACCEPT INDESIGN FILES. IF YOU USE INDESIGN, PLEASE SEND YOUR AD TO US AS A PDF.

2. All supporting graphic files (eps, tif, etc.) must accompany your ad. Files should be high resolution (266-300 dpi), line screen (lpi) at 133. If you cannot send your files with these settings, please send reflectives, slides or transparencies. Files with a lower resolution will be converted by our Production department to reproduce with the best quality possible. If we do not have your supporting graphics, we cannot run your ad.

3. All fonts used in your ad document must accompany your ad. If you do not include all fonts used, our Production department will substitute the closest matching font. Without both printer and screen fonts, we cannot run your ad.

4. In order to ensure color correctness, a Color Key, Tear Sheet or Match Print must be included with your ad. MI is not responsible for discrepancies between laser print color and the color that runs in the magazine. While B/W ads do not require a color key, it is a good idea to provide a laser print of your ad for comparison and proofing by our Production staff. MI is not responsible for any ads that run wrong if we were not provided a pre-press proof.

5. You can send your ad to MI on CD, Zip, Hi-Dens 3.5” floppy, via our ftp site or e-mail. It is not advisable to e-mail an ad over 8 mb in size. MI’s Production Department is Mac based, but can unzip most Zipped files. Stuffit or Stuffit Lite should be used for Mac file compression. If you ftp your ad, please send your sales rep an e-mail letting them know when the file has been completely uploaded and what the file name is.

FTP Information:
host: mimag.com
login: mi-advertising
password: guest
Your ftp program may prompt for a path.
Please leave it blank. No path is necessary.

We Cannot Process:

• Most PC files (PC Quark 4.0 or higher and Photoshop .tif files are ok)
• Syquest disks of any kind (our Pre-Press also refuses these, so there is absolutely nothing we can do with them)
• Files created using InDesign, PageMaker or Illustrator (we do not use these applications*)
• Any storage media other than those listed under #5 above (no Opticals or Bernoulis, please)
If you send your ad to us in any of these formats or on any unacceptable media,
we will be forced to charge any additional production costs back to the advertiser.

* MI prefers your ad be sent using Adobe’s Portable Document Format (pdf) as a means for sending your ad. Since pdfs embed the graphics and fonts into the file, sending them separately is no longer necessary. Our Production department has been successfully working with pdf files since the beginning of 1999, and many ads (all the way from 1” to full-page 4-color spreads) have been e-mailed to us since that time. If you need help configuring your system for this process, please call our Production Department.
